Coating Service-Time Percentiles: Explain the Estimation Method for Small Samples

A high percentile estimated from a small set of coating jobs can be unstable and method-dependent. State the sample count and calculation convention before using it as a customer scheduling promise.

The key distinction

Different software can interpolate percentiles differently. The data should also represent comparable jobs and include relevant delays rather than only successful fast completions.

Practical checks

  1. Define the job group and time measure.
  2. Record the percentile method and sample count.
  3. Update the estimate as representative observations accumulate.

Example

Illustrative example: a business calculates a ninetieth percentile from ten jobs and treats it as a firm service guarantee. A few additional slow jobs could change that estimate materially, so the planning statement should acknowledge its limited evidence.

Scope and limits

Do not confuse an observed percentile with a guaranteed maximum. Product curing requirements and actual scheduling dependencies remain separate from the statistical summary.
