Metal Colour Codes and Coating Chemistry: A Colour Match Does Not Establish Compatibility

A colour reference describes an appearance target, not the full chemistry of the finish. Two components with the same nominal colour can require different care and coating compatibility checks.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

Record the finish manufacturer, product and construction where available. The colour code remains useful for appearance discussions, but it should not replace the identity of the material that the nano coating will contact.

Practical checks

  1. Request the actual finish specification alongside the colour reference.
  2. Confirm the intended gloss or texture.
  3. Trial the proposed treatment on the representative finished sample.

Example

Illustrative example: two black panels share a colour designation, but one is powder coated and the other has a different decorative finish. A successful trial on one does not establish suitability on the other.

Scope and limits

Do not use a colour code as permission to apply the same preparation chemical across all matching components. Product-specific finish restrictions remain part of the work instruction.
