Powder-Coating Colour Codes: Ask for the Finish System as Well as the Shade

A colour code alone does not provide enough information to select an additional surface treatment. Ask for the powder-coating product or finish system, texture and care requirements as well as the visible shade.

The key distinction

Two components can share a nominal colour while differing in gloss, texture, production history or repair condition. A successful treatment on one should not be treated as approval for the other without checking those differences. Keep the identification practical: use the supplier's records rather than trying to reconstruct a formulation from appearance.

Practical checks

  1. Request the finish supplier, product reference and available care documentation for each relevant component.
  2. Group parts by confirmed finish identity, and keep repaired or uncertain areas separate.
  3. Select representative samples from those groups for an approved compatibility and appearance assessment.

Example

Illustrative example: a project specifies the same colour for a door and a decorative screen. One is smooth and the other textured, with different supplier references. A single test on the door does not answer how the screen will look or how the application method will work across its texture.

Scope and limits

Do not make a blanket suitability claim from a colour match. The coating manufacturer's recommendation should identify the actual surface and use. If the finish documentation is unavailable, record the uncertainty and seek a representative assessment before treating the full installation.
