Powder-Coated Surfaces: Keep Routine Cleaning Separate from Restoration

A heavily weathered powder-coated surface may need an assessment beyond routine cleaning. Clarify whether the requested service is removing dirt, restoring appearance or adding protection before choosing products and promising a result.

The key distinction

Interpon's maintenance guidance distinguishes routine care from situations requiring specialist renovation advice. A cleaner that removes surface soil cannot necessarily restore an altered finish, and an added coating does not automatically correct the underlying condition. Record the dry appearance after the approved cleaning assessment before discussing any further work.

Practical checks

  1. Identify the powder-coating system and obtain its current care guidance.
  2. Document the initial condition and perform only the appropriate cleaning assessment within that guidance.
  3. If appearance concerns remain, ask the finish supplier or a qualified specialist to define the next step before quoting protective treatment.

Example

Illustrative example: an exterior panel is dull after years of exposure. The customer requests a nano coating to make it look new. A controlled cleaning assessment may establish how much of the appearance is removable soil, while the remaining condition needs a separate restoration discussion.

Scope and limits

Do not assume automotive polishing methods are permitted on architectural powder coatings. Follow the finish supplier's restrictions and any project requirements. A coating trial should not be used to bypass an unresolved question about degradation, repair or the original finish warranty.
