Anodizing Seals and Nano Coatings: Do Not Treat Them as the Same Process

Sealing an anodic film is part of an anodizing process. It should not be confused with applying a separate protective nano coating to a finished anodized component.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

The Aluminum Anodizers Council describes sealing as closing pores in the anodic film. A later treatment has its own compatibility question and cannot be assumed to replace an unfinished anodizing stage.

Practical checks

  1. Ask the anodizer for the completed finish specification.
  2. Confirm the component's supplied condition and care restrictions.
  3. Obtain approval for the proposed additional coating system.

Example

Illustrative example: a buyer asks whether a nano coating can substitute for the anodizer's specified sealing process. The two operations should not be treated as interchangeable without a qualified system assessment.

Scope and limits

Do not alter an anodizing specification based on a water-beading demonstration. This guide does not approve NANOLAB products as anodizing sealants or establish performance on every anodized finish.
