Coating Project Contingency: Show Which Uncertainty the Allowance Covers

A contingency allowance is more useful when it identifies the uncertainty it covers. Keep it separate from measured quantities and known work rather than hiding it inside every line of a coating estimate.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

Possible uncertainties include access interruptions, surface-condition variation or an unresolved scheduling dependency. Some require technical investigation before work, while others can be represented as planning scenarios. An allowance does not make an unsuitable or unknown application acceptable.

Practical checks

  1. Name the uncertainty and its possible effect.
  2. Distinguish investigation needs from budget or schedule allowances.
  3. Update the allowance when evidence resolves the uncertainty.

Example

Illustrative example: a project includes time for an uncertain access window. Once the site confirms unrestricted access, the estimate should be reviewed instead of carrying the original allowance forward automatically.

Scope and limits

Do not use contingency to conceal missing scope or promise that every unexpected condition is included. The agreed quotation and product requirements still define the work.
