Create a Coating Project Assumptions Register

List unverified inputs that could change labour, product selection or access needs.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Every project estimate contains assumptions. A coating assumptions register makes the important ones visible so the team can verify them before they become costly misunderstandings. The register should focus on inputs that could change product choice, work scope or scheduling.

Write assumptions as specific statements

Identify the surface, condition, access or responsibility being assumed. Record the source and the person who will verify it. Replace vague entries such as normal preparation with a clear description of the condition used for the estimate.

Connect each assumption to its consequence

State what changes if the assumption is wrong. For example, discovering an existing factory treatment may require compatibility review before the selected coating can be recommended. A different access window may affect the work sequence without changing the product itself.

Review at decision points

Check the register during inspection, before purchasing and before application. Close items with evidence or update the estimate to reflect the remaining uncertainty. Do not allow an old assumption to remain in the file after a conversation has contradicted it. Share significant changes with the client and relevant staff. The register is useful when it explains why an estimate changed and who approved the revised scope, rather than serving as a generic disclaimer attached to every quotation.

Make assumptions visible in the estimate

Use columns for assumption, source, confidence, cost or schedule affected and the event that would require revision. Examples include measured area, access availability, known finish identity and the condition expected after cleaning.

Do not hide an unknown by choosing a convenient number. If a site survey has not yet confirmed the area, label the estimate provisional and state what will update it. Review assumptions with the customer before work begins and again when new information appears. This register gives the project team a practical way to explain a revised scope without pretending the original estimate was based on facts that were never available.
