Coating Project Material Reserves: Keep Unopened Reserve Separate from Working Stock

A project reserve should have a defined purpose and remain distinguishable from material already opened or allocated to routine work. This makes the remaining capacity easier to assess during a staged coating job.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

Record the reserve quantity, product identity and approved storage conditions. If the reserve is used, update the plan rather than continuing to report it as available protection against uncertainty. Unused material needs a documented disposition after the project.

Practical checks

  1. Define why reserve material is held.
  2. Track withdrawals and remaining unopened quantity.
  3. Review the reserve after scope or consumption changes.

Example

Illustrative example: a team uses its reserve to complete an expanded area but leaves the stock sheet unchanged. A later interruption reveals that the supposed reserve no longer exists. A separate allocation record prevents that false confidence.

Scope and limits

Do not assume opened material retains the same usable life as unopened stock. Follow the exact product's storage and opened-container instructions when planning any remaining capacity.
