Coating Trial Data: Keep Raw Observations Separate from Scores

A score compresses observations into a category. Retaining the underlying observations allows later review when the scoring rule is questioned.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Practical approach

Store measurements, photographs and descriptive notes alongside the assigned score. Use a clear rubric with examples where appropriate.

A score of three could reflect several different defects unless the record describes what the inspector actually saw.

Decision limits

Do not revise the rubric after testing without reassessing all affected samples consistently and documenting the change.
