Coating Trial Exclusions: Publish the Rule Before Removing Data

Data exclusions can be legitimate, but selective removal after seeing unfavourable results undermines the comparison.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Practical approach

Define invalid-measurement conditions in advance. Preserve excluded observations with their reason and report how many were removed.

A documented instrument fault differs from a valid sample that simply performed poorly.

Decision limits

Do not call an inconvenient result an outlier without investigation. Apply the same exclusion rule to all compared products.
