Rinsing around PPF Edges: Make the Wash Direction Part of the Care Brief

Include film-edge locations and the film maker’s washing instructions in the care brief for a coated PPF installation.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A vehicle owner usually sees a continuous glossy panel, while the installer knows where the film terminates. A useful wash brief makes those edges visible and connects them to the care instructions for the exact film.

Show the vulnerable geometry

Provide photographs of exposed edges, joins and wrapped returns that are easy to miss. Mark any area awaiting installation review. A care diagram should describe the actual vehicle rather than use a generic picture with a different film pattern.

Explain the rinse direction

Where pressure washing is permitted, follow the film manufacturer’s requirements for equipment, distance and technique. Avoid giving a universal pressure or distance that is unsupported for the installed product. Explain how the recommended direction and nozzle position relate to the marked edge, so the owner can recognise the situation during washing.

Include a practical handover

  • Identify the film and coating by product name.
  • State when the first wash is permitted.
  • Point out the edge locations on the vehicle.
  • Provide the approved routine cleaning method.
  • Explain what to do if an edge lifts or traps dirt.

Check understanding, then retain the record

Ask the owner or regular wash provider to describe how they would approach one marked edge. Correct uncertainty before the first wash. XPEL’s care page illustrates why product-specific instructions matter; its requirements should not be transferred automatically to another manufacturer’s film. A coating may change surface behaviour, but it does not erase the film’s installation boundaries or replace its washing requirements.
