Reducing Private-Label SKU Count without Removing a Needed Use Case

Reduce private-label coating SKUs by comparing real use cases, technical differences and transition needs rather than names alone.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Two products with similar names may serve different application conditions, while differently branded products may substantially overlap. A SKU reduction should start with use cases and evidence.

Map what each SKU does

Record substrate, application process, pack size, customer type and required documentation. Include the reason customers select it. Low sales alone do not show that a product has no necessary role.

Identify true overlap

Comparison Question
Technical use Can one product meet both specifications?
Application Would installers need retraining?
Packaging Is the difference only quantity or dispenser?
Customer promise Would claims or service terms change?

Validate the proposed replacement

Test the retained product in the use case of the proposed discontinued SKU. Do not assume substitution from a shared ingredient description or similar beading. Record differences that matter to the user, including preparation and care.

Plan the transition

Address remaining stock, labels, instructions, quotations and support records. Keep old product identities searchable for existing customers. For example, consolidating two pack sizes may simplify inventory without changing the formulation, while consolidating two surface-specific products can require substantial validation. Approve the reduction only when the necessary use case remains covered and the replacement is communicated accurately.

Discuss your private-label coating project. For application and care, use the current instructions for the exact product.
