Random Sampling and Random Assignment in Coating Trials: Different Purposes

Random sampling concerns which units enter a study; random assignment concerns which treatment they receive. One does not automatically provide the benefits associated with the other.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

A trial can randomly assign coatings to a convenient set of panels without randomly sampling the wider population of finishes or users. Its conclusion should reflect both the selection process and the treatment design.

Practical checks

  1. Describe how specimens or participants were selected.
  2. Describe how treatments were assigned.
  3. Keep population coverage and internal comparison questions separate.

Example

Illustrative example: two coatings are randomly assigned across panels prepared by one workshop. The assignment can support a fair comparison within that setup, but it does not make the workshop a random sample of every installer.

Scope and limits

Do not use the word randomized as a universal quality badge. The study design and actual population determine which conclusions the evidence can support.
