Coating Crossover Trials: Account for the First Treatment’s Carryover

Testing two treatments sequentially on the same specimen can introduce carryover from the first. A crossover design needs a justified way to address that history before it can support a fair comparison.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

Removing a treatment or cleaning the sample may itself change the surface. The study designer should determine whether a crossover is appropriate or whether separate matched specimens are needed.

Practical checks

  1. Identify every irreversible or persistent step.
  2. Define the approved reset or alternative specimen design.
  3. Record treatment order and any remaining limitation.

Example

Illustrative example: a panel receives one coating, is corrected and then receives another. The second result includes a different preparation history and should not automatically be treated as an identical starting condition.

Scope and limits

Do not strip or modify customer property to create an improvised experiment. Use a controlled laboratory or trial design appropriate to the coating system.
