A panel with widespread light swirls and a few deep isolated scratches does not necessarily need the same heavy-cut treatment everywhere. The broad swirl pattern and the individual outliers are different correction problems. Separating them can preserve paint and produce a clearer service agreement.
First establish the improvement wanted across the whole panel. A suitable fine-cut test may adequately reduce the widespread marks. Then assess the isolated scratches separately, considering paint history, position, available thickness information and signs of damage beyond the outer finish.
Do not use a fingernail catch or one gauge reading as a complete decision rule. Neither establishes a safe removal allowance. A scratch near an edge or on an uncertain repair deserves particular restraint even when neighbouring paint appears healthy.
| Approach | When it may make sense |
| — | — |
| Mild correction across the panel | Overall appearance is the priority |
| Limited local heavy cut followed by refinement | A specific defect can reasonably be improved |
| Retain the isolated scratch | Further removal is unjustified or condition is uncertain |
The local option needs a controlled working boundary. Avoid concentrating repeated machine work into a tiny point merely because the scratch itself is narrow. Access, pad contact and the transition into surrounding paint all matter. If the geometry cannot be controlled, refer the defect for specialist assessment.
After the chosen correction and refinement, inspect the local area alongside the surrounding finish. Check for a halo of different haze or texture as well as the original scratch. A less visible scratch with an obvious polished patch may fail the overall appearance goal.
Explain retained defects before delivery and keep a photograph in the job record. The message should describe the result and the reason for the limit, without claiming to know an exact remaining clear-coat thickness unless it has actually been measured by an appropriate method.
Heavy cut is most useful when its scope is deliberate. A few stubborn lines should not automatically determine the treatment applied to an otherwise lightly marked panel.
