Coating Production Yield Across Stages: Multiply Retained Fractions

When successive stages each retain a fraction of the incoming quantity, calculate the combined yield by multiplying those fractions. Adding the loss percentages can misstate the result.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

The stages must use a consistent quantity basis and a clearly defined input-output relationship. Keep rework and recovered material separate if they change the actual process model.

Practical checks

  1. Record each stage's input and accepted output.
  2. Calculate its retained fraction.
  3. Multiply the applicable fractions and reconcile with the full-run record.

Example

Arithmetic example: a hypothetical process retains 95 percent at one stage and 98 percent at the next. Combined yield is 0.95 multiplied by 0.98, or 93.1 percent, not 93 percent from simple subtraction.

Scope and limits

These are illustrative process numbers, not NANOLAB yields. Use the actual material flow and approved production records rather than applying a simplified formula to an incompatible process.
