Coating Printer Files: Keep Editable Artwork and Production Output Linked

The editable design file and the production-ready output should remain linked by revision. Otherwise, a later correction can be made to an old source file and reintroduce content that was already removed from the approved print version.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

The packaging record should identify which source produced which final file. Keep approval status distinct from file format: a PDF is not approved merely because it is ready to open or print. A repeat order should retrieve the controlled production file and the associated specification rather than the most convenient attachment.

Practical checks

  1. Assign a revision to the editable source and exported production file.
  2. Record the approval and printer handover for that pair.
  3. Check the link before making corrections or issuing a repeat order.

Example

Illustrative example: a designer updates a saved source file that predates the final technical correction. The new export looks current but restores the obsolete text. A source-to-output revision record would reveal the mismatch before the revised label reaches production.

Scope and limits

Do not overwrite the only approved record without preserving traceability. This guide does not prescribe a particular design application or storage platform. The useful requirement is that the team can identify the exact source, output and approval behind the packaging being ordered.
