Coating Area Rounding: Sum the Actual Areas Before Ordering Material

Rounding every small panel upward can inflate a project total. Preserve suitable precision through the area calculation, then apply a clearly stated purchasing allowance at the appropriate stage.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

A material allowance should address a real process need, not conceal accumulated rounding. Keep measured area, exclusions and the allowance as separate entries so the estimate can be reviewed and updated.

Practical checks

  1. Calculate individual areas consistently.
  2. Sum them before applying the agreed final rounding.
  3. Show any material allowance separately with its basis.

Example

Arithmetic example: twenty panels each measure 0.24 square metres, giving 4.8 square metres. Rounding each to 0.3 first produces six square metres, a 25 percent increase unrelated to measured area.

Scope and limits

This does not imply that material should be ordered without an allowance. The appropriate quantity depends on the approved application process, representative consumption and supply format; those inputs should remain explicit.
