Equal applied force does not mean equal contact pressure when the contact areas differ. A coating test comparison should retain the tool geometry and contact arrangement alongside the load.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge
For a simple uniform-pressure calculation, pressure equals force divided by area. Real test contacts may have more complex distributions, so the formula does not replace the method's technical interpretation.
Arithmetic example: ten newtons distributed uniformly over one square centimetre gives 100 kilopascals. Over two square centimetres, the corresponding average is 50 kilopascals.
These examples do not describe stress beneath a scratch tip or establish a safe surface load. The laboratory must interpret the actual contact mechanics and test method.
