Distinguish a batch certificate of analysis from a technical data sheet, check acceptance limits, and keep product revisions traceable.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge
A technical data sheet describes a product and its intended use. A certificate of analysis, when supplied, reports specified information about an identified batch. A batch result is meaningful only when its test method, units and acceptance limits are understood.
Use the technical data sheet for application conditions, substrate guidance and the stated product characteristics. Use the certificate of analysis to check the batch against the properties it actually reports. Neither document should be stretched to cover tests that are absent.
For example, an appearance and density check does not establish five-year exterior durability. A certificate carrying the correct batch number is valuable traceability, but it is not automatically a comprehensive performance certification.
An illustrative specification might accept a measured property between 0.88 and 0.92 in the stated units and conditions. A result of 0.90 lies within that range. It is not necessarily “better” than 0.89; both may satisfy the same requirement.
If a document gives only “passes,” ask whether the associated method and acceptance criterion are available when they are needed for your quality process. Avoid requesting extra numerical detail that would not change the receiving decision.
Record product code, batch, document date and specification revision. A result assessed against an obsolete limit may not answer the current purchase requirement. If a product name changes, confirm the relationship between the old and new identities before merging their records.
For a private-label project, agree which batch information is supplied and how exceptions are handled before routine ordering. Keep any additional laboratory study distinct from routine release checks. This gives purchasing and technical staff a shared basis for accepting material without implying that every shipment has undergone every possible end-use test.
