When the Reference Coating Changes: Preserve Continuity in a Long-Term Trial

Preserve comparability when a reference coating changes during a long trial by documenting the revision and running an overlap where feasible.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A long-running trial may outlast the availability of its reference coating. Replacing the reference without documenting the change can create an apparent performance shift that belongs to the comparison system rather than the candidate product.

Identify what changed

Record product name, formulation or specification revision, batch, package and application instructions. A familiar brand name does not guarantee that the reference is technically unchanged.

Plan a bridge comparison

Where suitable retained material is available, test the old and new references together with the candidate under a common method. Confirm that the old material remains valid for use. Do not use degraded stock merely to preserve the old label.

Keep the series distinguishable

Record Purpose
Reference version Identifies the comparator
Change date Marks the boundary in the trial
Bridge results Shows observed differences under shared conditions
Remaining uncertainty Limits interpretation across the boundary

Do not manufacture continuity

If no valid overlap is possible, report the periods separately and explain the limitation. A numerical adjustment needs evidence; it should not be chosen simply to make two charts join smoothly. Preserve the original observations and methods. The trial can still provide useful within-period comparisons even when a single uninterrupted ranking is no longer justified.
