A Two-Day Coating Comparison That Separates Product and Workshop Effects

Use a blocked two-day workshop trial to compare coatings without confusing product performance with daily changes in conditions.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Testing coating A on Monday and coating B on Tuesday makes product and day inseparable. A difference could come from the formula, panel preparation, lighting, operator or workshop conditions. A small blocked trial gives each product a fair opportunity on each day.

Arrange the work before opening the bottles

Prepare comparable, individually identified panels. On both days, apply both coatings according to their own current instructions. Randomise the order within each day and use separate clean consumables. Keep the intended substrate and evaluation method consistent while recording conditions rather than assuming they remained constant.

Block Panel allocation Comparison
Day one A and B, order randomised A versus B under day-one conditions
Day two A and B, order randomised A versus B under day-two conditions

Read the within-day differences

Illustrative levelling times are 90 and 110 seconds on day one, and 125 and 145 seconds on day two. Both days show a twenty-second difference, while the whole process is slower on day two. Comparing only A’s first-day result with B’s second-day result would exaggerate the apparent product difference to fifty-five seconds.

These four observations illustrate the calculation; they are not enough to establish a reliable product ranking. Add independent panels and repeat the design where the decision warrants it. Record finish acceptance alongside time: a faster incomplete wipe is not an improvement.

Keep application instructions product-specific

Fair comparison does not mean forcing both coatings into one arbitrary flash time. Follow each approved process and define the operational question clearly. You may compare total job time under recommended use, or a specific property after controlled preparation, but those are different experiments.

Decide what disagreement means

If A is easier on one day and B on another, investigate the recorded conditions and possible interactions. Do not discard the inconvenient day. The next useful trial may target the condition that changed, using approved application ranges. The objective is a dependable workshop choice, not a photograph of the best panel.
