Ceramic Coating Test Panels Stored Face Down: Protect the Reference Surface

A test panel stored face down can acquire contamination or contact marks before the next coating observation.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A test panel stored face down can acquire contamination or contact marks before the next coating observation. The reference surface must be protected throughout the trial, not only during application. Record storage as part of the method so later changes can be interpreted in context.

Choose a suitable support arrangement

Use supports and storage materials compatible with the panel, coating and required cure. Avoid contact with the working face unless the method specifically permits it. A soft-looking pad can still carry grit, transfer residue or imprint a surface under prolonged load.

Label the panel on an appropriate non-test area so it can be identified without touching the measurement zone. Keep reference and treated samples separated and protected from workshop dust, overspray and accidental product transfer. Follow product and facility requirements for ventilation and storage.

Document orientation and handling changes. If one panel is stored face down and another remains upright, the difference should not disappear from the final comparison.

Inspect before resuming the trial

Check for contact patterns, dust and residue using the planned observation method. If contamination is found, decide how the protocol handles it before cleaning. A new cleaner or extra polishing step may change the surface being studied.

Keep affected data and the incident record rather than silently replacing an inconvenient result. A repeat sample may be appropriate, but identify it as a repeat and preserve the reason. Good storage control prevents an avoidable handling event from being mistaken for coating deterioration and keeps the reference panel useful for the comparison it was created to support.
