Gloss Improvement from Coating: Use the Same Prepared Surface as the Reference

A coating's contribution to gloss should be compared with the same prepared surface before application.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A coating's contribution to gloss should be compared with the same prepared surface before application. If the before image shows oxidised or scratched paint and the after image follows polishing and coating, the result belongs to the combined process. It does not isolate how much change came from the coating itself.

Preserve the prepared reference

Inspect and record the surface after the approved preparation and before coating. Keep lighting, camera position and exposure consistent for photographs. Where the trial design permits, retain a comparable prepared reference area that does not receive the coating.

For numerical gloss measurement, use suitable equipment, the specified geometry and a documented verification procedure. Manufacturer guidance from Konica Minolta explains gloss as a measured reflective property; a photograph's brightness is not a substitute for an instrument reading. Keep the measurement conditions with the result.

Avoid changing several finishing products at once. A topper, oily residue or different wipe-down can affect the comparison and should remain visible in the process record.

Report the observed change honestly

Inspect after the coating's required cure and surface-conditioning process. Repeat measurements at suitable locations and report variability where relevant. A small difference should be interpreted in relation to the method's capability, not exaggerated through extra decimal places.

If only complete before-and-after service photographs exist, describe them as the result of preparation and protection together. That can still be useful evidence of the service outcome. For a specific coating-gloss claim, plan a comparison that isolates the treatment and retains an accepted dry reference. Clear attribution makes the result more credible than assigning every improvement in a corrected panel to the last product applied.
