A fresh topper can change the water behaviour of a surface during a long-term coating trial.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge
A fresh topper can change the water behaviour of a surface during a long-term coating trial. After that treatment, an observation concerns the combined maintained system, not necessarily the original coating alone. Decide whether the trial is evaluating an unmaintained coating or a specified maintenance programme before adding another product.
Record every cleaner, drying aid, topper and restorative step used on the sample. Include dates and application methods. A product used during a routine wash may still affect the surface being observed, even if the operator does not think of it as a new protection layer.
If maintenance products are part of the intended system, specify their use from the start and apply the same protocol to relevant comparison samples. The result can then describe that maintained system under the stated conditions.
If the purpose is to evaluate the original coating without such additions, avoid introducing a topper midway. Do not apply one just before filming a disappointing water test and present the new behaviour as unchanged original performance.
Keep the earlier data and mark the date when the surface history changed. Report later observations separately or begin a suitable new comparison. Do not assume that a cleaning step completely removes the topper unless an appropriate validated process establishes that for the system.
For everyday maintenance, a compatible topper may still be an approved choice. The issue is attribution in the trial, not a blanket judgment about maintenance products. Clear treatment records let a reader understand which system was actually observed and prevent a fresh surface effect from being mistaken for evidence of the original layer's remaining life.
