Comparing Coatings on Horizontal and Vertical Panels

Horizontal and vertical panels experience water, contamination and handling differently.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Horizontal and vertical panels experience water, contamination and handling differently. Comparing their coating behaviour can be useful for maintenance planning, but orientation is part of the exposure, not a neutral background detail. Do not treat a bonnet and a door as identical test samples simply because the same product was applied.

Separate exposure from measurement

Record panel orientation, location, substrate and preparation. Note differences in sunlight, runoff, contact and cleaning access. A horizontal surface may retain water differently from a vertical one, so a photograph of moving drops includes geometry as well as surface properties.

For a controlled material comparison, use an appropriate test design with comparable samples and consistent measurement orientation where the method requires it. If the purpose is real-service observation, retain the actual orientation and describe the exposure clearly.

Keep cleaning and inspection methods consistent within each comparison. Do not apply a maintenance product to the bonnet alone and later attribute the difference solely to panel angle.

Interpret the result for the right decision

Different conditions after use may justify different maintenance attention without proving a formulation defect. Inspect both surfaces after approved cleaning and distinguish removable contamination from persistent changes. Use repeated observations rather than one rain event to guide the next question.

Report results by panel or exposure group rather than averaging them into a single unsupported durability number. If a laboratory test is needed to isolate orientation effects, consult an appropriate testing provider. A practical vehicle log can show where care is needed and how the system behaves in service, while remaining honest about the factors that were not controlled.
