Coating Durability Reports: Describe the Endpoint before Comparing Months

Durability reports are difficult to compare when they count months to different endpoints.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Durability reports are difficult to compare when they count months to different endpoints. One trial may stop when water behaviour changes, another when cleaning effort rises and another after visible damage. Define what reaching the endpoint means before using time as a product comparison.

State the observation and threshold

Identify the surface, preparation, coating, cure and maintenance system. Choose an endpoint relevant to the intended question and explain how it will be assessed. A subjective appearance judgment needs a consistent reference, while a numerical measure needs an appropriate method and decision rule.

Record exposure and inspection intervals. Calendar time alone does not describe washing frequency, contamination, contact or storage. A sheltered panel and a daily-use surface may accumulate very different service histories over the same number of months.

Keep maintenance interventions visible. Cleaning, toppers and repairs can change the system being evaluated and therefore the meaning of a later endpoint.

Report ongoing and completed trials differently

If a sample has not reached the defined endpoint when observation ends, state the observed period without inventing a failure date. An ongoing twelve-month observation is not the same result as failure at twelve months. Likewise, an unobserved interval creates uncertainty about exactly when a change occurred.

When comparing reports, align endpoint, method and exposure before drawing conclusions. If they cannot be aligned, present them as different observations rather than a precise ranking. A clear durability report lets a reader understand what lasted, under which conditions and according to which criterion. The month count becomes useful only when those definitions accompany it.
