A coating-thickness claim is meaningful only when the method can measure the layer being discussed. A number displayed by an automotive paint gauge may describe the combined coating system above its substrate rather than a newly applied ceramic layer. Ask what the instrument detects before interpreting a before-and-after difference.
Record the instrument, probe, substrate, verification procedure and stated range, resolution and accuracy for the application. Resolution is the smallest displayed increment; it does not alone establish the uncertainty of a measured difference. Consult the instrument manufacturer about suitability for the particular layer system.
DeFelsko's automotive guidance distinguishes gauge options by substrate and describes total coating-thickness measurement on metal panels. That context matters when a surface contains several layers. A gauge reading should not be relabelled as ceramic-film thickness without an appropriate validated basis.
Repeat readings at controlled locations and retain the raw results. Differences in position, curvature, substrate or instrument setup can affect a comparison and should not be hidden by reporting only a preferred pair of numbers.
If the proposed layer is below the method's demonstrated capability in that system, use a suitable laboratory approach rather than subtracting two uncertain readings and adding decimal places. Ask the testing provider to define what is measured and how uncertainty is reported.
Keep consumption, wet application and cured-film thickness as separate quantities. They are not interchangeable labels for the same observation. A useful report may conclude that the workshop method cannot resolve the added layer reliably. That is a valid measurement limit, not proof that no coating exists or permission to invent a thickness from the bottle volume used.
