A specimen-volume calculation requires compatible length units. Mixing square millimetres with a thickness in centimetres without conversion produces an incorrect volume even when the multiplication itself is accurate.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge
For a rectangular specimen, multiply length, width and thickness in one consistent unit system. State whether the dimensions describe the whole coupon, its substrate or a particular layer before interpreting the result.
Arithmetic example: a rectangular coupon twenty millimetres long, ten millimetres wide and one millimetre thick has a volume of two hundred cubic millimetres, equivalent to zero point two cubic centimetres.
This geometry example does not establish applied coating thickness, density or coverage. Use a suitable measurement method for the property required rather than deriving an unsupported performance claim from nominal specimen dimensions.
