Coating Panel Edges: Convert Perimeter and Thickness into Area

A panel edge has area as well as length. For a uniform flat panel, multiply the included perimeter by its thickness when the edge is part of the approved coating scope.

The key distinction

Keep dimensions in the same units and exclude edges that are inaccessible or outside the agreement. Edge preparation and application effort may differ from work on a broad face, so area alone does not determine labour.

Practical checks

  1. Identify which edges are included.
  2. Calculate their total length and multiply by thickness.
  3. List the edge area separately from the face area.

Example

Arithmetic example: a rectangular panel measuring two by one metres has a six-metre perimeter. At a thickness of 0.01 metres, all four edges represent 0.06 square metres.

Scope and limits

Do not assume that an exposed edge has the same finish or coating approval as the face. Confirm the actual construction and treatment boundary before including it in the work instruction.
