Zinc-Coated Steel: Identify the Process Behind the Word Galvanized

Galvanized is sometimes used loosely for different zinc-containing finishes. Identify the actual process and supplied surface before requesting a compatible preparation or nano-coating method.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

The American Galvanizers Association distinguishes hot-dip galvanizing from other zinc-coating processes. Their products and surface conditions should not be assumed equivalent merely because zinc appears in the description.

Practical checks

  1. Obtain the finish specification and fabrication history.
  2. Identify any additional paint, passivation or treatment on the exposed face.
  3. Ask the coating supplier about that exact finished system.

Example

Illustrative example: an enquiry describes galvanized steel but omits that the visible surface is a factory-painted layer over zinc-coated sheet. The coating would contact the paint, so the outer finish must lead the compatibility discussion.

Scope and limits

Do not use a cosmetic nano coating as a substitute for an engineered corrosion-protection specification. This guide does not prescribe zinc preparation or claim approval for any particular NANOLAB product.
