Coating Cutouts and Openings: Deduct Missing Faces but Review New Edges

A cutout removes face area but creates an edge that may belong in the coating scope. Record both effects instead of subtracting the opening and assuming the estimate is complete.

The key distinction

The drawing should distinguish open space, exposed cut edges and any fitted insert. Each may have a different finish and access requirement. Use the actual approved treatment boundary rather than a purely geometric total.

Practical checks

  1. Subtract the opening from the included face area.
  2. Calculate any approved exposed edge separately.
  3. Identify inserts or hardware as separate scope items.

Example

Arithmetic example: a 0.2 by 0.3-metre opening removes 0.06 square metres from each affected face. Its one-metre perimeter can add edge area if the cut surface is included.

Scope and limits

Do not assume a cut edge has the same coating compatibility as the surrounding factory finish. Confirm preparation and approval for the actual exposed material before counting it as treated area.
