Linear-Metre Coating Prices: Ask Which Width the Rate Assumes

A price per linear metre does not define surface area unless the width or geometry is known. Clarify the included face and dimensions before comparing it with a square-metre quotation.

The key distinction

Linear pricing may be convenient for a consistent profile or strip. It becomes ambiguous when widths vary or when returns and edges are included differently. Keep the profile reference attached to the rate.

Practical checks

  1. Obtain the cross-section or width assumed by the quotation.
  2. Identify the surfaces included in each running metre.
  3. Convert only after the geometry and scope are confirmed.

Example

Arithmetic example: one linear metre of a flat strip 0.3 metres wide represents 0.3 square metres on one face. A 0.6-metre-wide strip represents twice that area at the same length.

Scope and limits

The conversion does not establish equal labour for different profiles. Access, preparation and finish requirements may justify different rates even when the calculated areas match.
