Coating Circular Panels: Distinguish Diameter from Radius in Area Estimates

A circular panel's area is pi multiplied by the radius squared. If the supplied dimension is a diameter, divide it by two before calculating the area.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

The estimate should identify whether one face, two faces or the edge is included. A dimension drawing without the treatment scope does not determine the total coating area.

Practical checks

  1. Confirm that the dimension refers to diameter or radius.
  2. Calculate each included face in consistent units.
  3. Record edge treatment and openings separately.

Example

Arithmetic example: a panel with a one-metre diameter has a radius of 0.5 metres and one-face area of about 0.785 square metres. Using one metre as the radius would incorrectly produce about 3.142 square metres.

Scope and limits

The calculation describes an ideal circular face. It does not establish access, preparation time or approved application to the panel's finish. Verify those requirements before converting area into a quotation or material order.
