Coating Area on Cylindrical Metal: Use Circumference, Not Projected Width

For the curved side of a cylinder, area equals circumference multiplied by length. A front-view rectangle understates the surface that would be treated around the full circumference.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

Use outside diameter and the actual coated length. End faces, fittings and excluded contact areas require separate treatment in the scope. Geometry estimates area; it does not establish coating suitability.

Practical checks

  1. Convert dimensions to one unit system.
  2. Calculate curved area as pi multiplied by diameter and length.
  3. Add only the approved end faces and subtract defined exclusions.

Example

Arithmetic example: a cylinder with a 0.2-metre outside diameter and one-metre coated length has about 0.628 square metres of curved area. Its projected rectangle is only 0.2 square metres.

Scope and limits

Do not apply this calculation to an irregular shape without checking the geometry. Consumption still needs a product-specific, representative process estimate that includes relevant application losses.
