Coating Stock Planning: Separate Expected Sales from Confirmed Reservations

Expected sales and confirmed reservations should not be counted as two independent demands when they refer to the same future order. Reconcile the forecast and order book so a growing coating business does not purchase stock twice for one commitment.

The key distinction

Define how an enquiry becomes a forecast item and how a confirmed order replaces or reduces that forecast. Keep the method consistent across sales staff and product variants. The goal is not to eliminate uncertainty, but to make it visible and prevent optimistic pipeline entries from being treated as additional firm demand.

Practical checks

  1. Give significant opportunities a traceable reference and state their forecast status.
  2. When an order is confirmed, reconcile it with the corresponding forecast entry rather than simply adding it to the total.
  3. Review unmatched reservations and forecast items before committing a purchase quantity.

Example

Arithmetic example: a forecast includes 100 bottles for a distributor opportunity. When a confirmed order for those same 100 bottles arrives, leaving both entries active produces an apparent requirement of 200. Reconciliation should preserve the confirmed 100 and any genuinely separate demand.

Scope and limits

Do not convert uncertain enquiries into guaranteed sales or remove unrelated demand to make stock coverage look comfortable. Record assumptions and review them as evidence changes. This is an operational forecasting example, not a prediction of NANOLAB demand or a recommendation to buy a particular quantity.
