How Much Extra Volume Must a Coating Discount Generate?

Calculate the extra coating sales a discount must generate to preserve contribution, including promotional costs and displaced purchases.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A price discount reduces contribution per unit unless costs fall too. The extra sales required to preserve contribution can be much larger than the percentage discount. Calculate the change before treating a promotion as automatically beneficial.

Compare contribution before and after

In an illustrative example, a product sells for 50 currency units with variable cost of 30. Contribution is 20 per unit. A 10 percent price reduction lowers the price to 45 and contribution to 15, assuming variable cost stays unchanged.

To preserve the contribution from 100 original units, the promotion must generate 2,000 ÷ 15, or about 134 units. That is roughly 34 percent more units, not 10 percent. Use whole sellable units when planning.

Include the promotion's extra costs

Advertising, extra fulfilment, payment fees and support can change the calculation. If the promotion also changes shipping policy or bundle contents, compare the complete offer. A discount funded by lower variable cost has a different effect from one funded entirely from contribution.

Do not count all promotional sales as incremental. Some customers would have purchased at the normal price or may simply move a future purchase forward. A short sales spike is not automatically sustained demand growth.

Define the purpose and review window

A launch promotion may aim to generate qualified trials rather than preserve immediate contribution. State that objective and measure the relevant follow-up. Keep the commercial cost visible instead of disguising it as a margin-neutral activity.

For a coating brand, compare expected incremental contribution with the campaign's cost and capacity requirements. Use conservative scenarios and actual realized prices. The arithmetic is a planning tool; it cannot guarantee how customers will respond or that a larger order volume will translate into a healthier business.
