Unsold and Unusable Coating Stock: Include Write-Off Scenarios in Launch Costing

Include unsold or unusable stock scenarios in coating launch costs and compare quantity discounts against realistic sell-through.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A launch can show an attractive unit cost while ignoring the portion of stock that may never be sold in suitable condition. Including an explicit unsold or unusable-stock scenario makes the economics more realistic without pretending to predict exactly how much will be lost.

Calculate cost per sold unit

In an illustrative batch, 500 units cost 10 each, for a total product cost of 5,000. If only 450 are sold and the remaining 50 have no recoverable value, the product cost spread across sold units becomes about 11.11 each. That excludes other launch and operating costs.

Do not use the lower purchase cost of 10 as though all 500 generated revenue. Equally, do not assume every unsold unit is already a loss; suitable stock may still be sellable. Keep current inventory and confirmed write-offs distinct.

Identify the reason for exposure

Possible causes include slower demand, obsolete packaging, damage, storage outside instructions or reaching the documented usable-life limit. Record the actual cause when known. This helps distinguish a forecasting issue from a handling or supplier issue.

Never extend a product's stated storage life or relabel a batch simply to improve the model. Follow the supplier's disposition guidance for questionable stock.

Compare realistic scenarios before ordering

Show the result at several plausible sell-through levels and include any agreed recovery value. Use the same assumptions when comparing smaller and larger order options. A quantity discount may disappear economically if the additional units are unlikely to move.

For a NANOLAB private-label launch, a phased range and documented reorder plan may reduce exposure. The appropriate order size depends on actual commercial terms and demand evidence. A transparent scenario helps make that decision before unused stock becomes an expensive surprise.
