Use ABC analysis to prioritize coating inventory reviews while preserving separate controls for operationally critical consumables.

ABC analysis groups stock by a chosen measure of importance, often annual consumption value. It can help focus review effort, but a low-value item may still be essential to completing a coating installation. Financial ranking and operational criticality should remain separate.
Multiply annual unit movement by a consistent unit cost to obtain consumption value for each SKU. Sort the results and calculate each share of the total. State whether samples, internal use and returns are included.
In an illustrative range, a frequently used coating may dominate consumption value while an inexpensive applicator contributes little. The applicator can still stop a job if no approved substitute is available. Its low financial rank does not justify neglecting replenishment.
There is no requirement that every range fit a fashionable fixed percentage split. Use categories to decide review frequency, counting effort and planning attention. Record the thresholds so that classifications are reproducible.
Overlay other relevant flags: permitted storage period, supply lead time, lack of substitutes and batch-traceability needs. A slow-moving specialist product may require careful monitoring because it can become unusable before sale.
A new distributor, product launch or discontinued SKU can change the pattern. Recalculate on a suitable schedule and avoid treating an initial launch shipment as a permanent annual run rate.
For a coating distributor, the useful output is a manageable review plan: which items need close demand tracking, which require continuity protection and which merit a stock-reduction discussion. ABC analysis is a prioritization tool. It should improve availability and stock discipline without reducing quality controls or encouraging use of unsuitable substitutes for apparently minor consumables.
