Separating Polish Sample Coding from Storage Conditions

Coding bottles can reduce brand bias in a comparison, but it must not erase handling information. The tester still needs safe and consistent storage instructions.

Assess the starting condition

Use compatible sample containers with the required safety and product-use information available to the responsible organiser. Keep the identity key secure within the test record rather than relying on memory.

A practical working method

  1. Record batch, sample preparation date and any transfer conditions.
  2. Store coded samples according to their respective instructions.
  3. Match sample condition and temperature at the start of the comparison where practicable.
  4. Reveal identities only after observations and acceptance decisions are recorded.

Common mistake

Treating every coded bottle alike can subject different products to unsuitable handling. A blind label also does not make unequal or contaminated samples comparable.

What a useful result looks like

The result should distinguish the observations from product identity and from sample history. Report any handling differences that could affect interpretation. Use coded testing as one part of evaluation, followed by a documented trial in the actual workshop process.
