A pad can have a clean working face and a contaminated attachment side. Inspect both before fitting it to the polisher.
Look for dried compound, fibres and damage on the pad backing and backing plate. Check that the attachment system is intended for the machine. Contamination can interfere with consistent seating even when the foam appears usable.
Cleaning only the polishing face overlooks a different part of the contact system. An improvised fix can create uncertain attachment and make later inspection harder.
The accepted setup has intact, clean and compatible components. Record recurring contamination so storage and pad-cleaning routines can be improved. If a pad shifts or the tool vibrates unexpectedly during work, stop and inspect rather than carrying on to finish the section.
