Polishing Beside Paint Protection Film with a Wrapped Edge

A wrapped PPF edge may hide the boundary between protected and exposed paint. Locate that boundary before machine correction near the panel perimeter.

Assess the starting condition

Inspect returns, seams and recessed edges in good light. Confirm whether the intended working area is exposed paint, film or both. The film’s topcoat and installation history can affect its care requirements, so the paint-polishing process should not automatically cross onto it.

A practical working method

  1. Ask the installer or customer for a coverage map where the boundary is unclear.
  2. Clean the area and protect the film edge using an approved method.
  3. Keep the pad on the confirmed exposed paint and use controlled sections near returns.
  4. Inspect the boundary after cleanup for trapped compound, adhesive disturbance or new marks.

Common mistake

Running a pad over an invisible wrapped edge can damage the film while apparently improving the paint. Strong adhesive removers used during cleanup may create a second compatibility issue.

What a useful result looks like

An accepted job has improved exposed paint and an intact film boundary. Document areas excluded from correction and choose the later coating plan for paint and PPF separately. An uncertain edge is a reason to clarify coverage, not to make additional exploratory passes.
