Mean or Median Cleaning Time? Choose the Summary That Answers the Question

Compare mean and median cleaning times, retain legitimate difficult jobs, and choose a summary that matches the operational question.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The mean and median summarize different aspects of a set of job times. The mean uses every value in the total; the median identifies the middle of the ordered observations. Both can be useful when coating or maintenance work includes occasional long jobs.

Work through an example

For illustrative cleaning times of 8, 9, 10, 11 and 42 minutes, the mean is 16 minutes and the median is 10 minutes. Neither calculation is wrong. The long job increases the mean substantially while leaving the median at the middle observation.

If the question is total labour planning, ignoring that long job may understate demand. If the question is the middle customer experience, the median may be informative. Report the range or distribution as well so the reader can see the variation.

Investigate unusual values without deleting them casually

Check whether the 42-minute observation was a genuine difficult job, a recording error or a different scope of work. Correct documented errors, but retain legitimate difficult jobs in the appropriate analysis. Excluding them merely because they weaken a result biases the comparison.

If different job types are mixed, separate them using criteria defined by the work rather than by the outcome. Large vehicles, restoration work and routine maintenance may require different planning groups.

Use the same summary across comparisons

Do not compare the median for one coating process with the mean for another and describe the difference as a performance advantage. Keep the sample definition, endpoint and summary method aligned.

For internal reporting, show job count, total minutes, mean, median and a simple spread indicator. This compact set helps distinguish an ordinary time saving from a process that works quickly most days but occasionally creates substantial rework. A single attractive average cannot convey that operational difference.
