Contact Abrasion and Chemical Exposure: Separate Coating Test Questions

Rubbing with a cleaner combines mechanical and chemical effects. Keep the test design clear before describing the result as chemical resistance alone.

List the exposures

Record the liquid, contact duration, tool, loading and movement. A stationary spot, a wipe and an immersion are different conditions. The same chemical concentration does not make them equivalent.

Use appropriate comparison groups

When the question requires it, separate exposure without rubbing from a documented contact process. Keep the surface and application comparable. Do not add increasingly aggressive strokes until a desired failure appears and then present that as a predefined test.

Report the actual method

Describe which combined or separated exposure was performed and what was observed after suitable inspection. Avoid assigning an exclusive mechanism when the design cannot distinguish it. Use relevant laboratory testing when a formal product claim requires a supported standard and expertise.

Frequently asked question

Can a solvent-soaked rubbing test prove chemical resistance independently of abrasion?

No. The contact process introduces another variable that must be accounted for.
