A compound’s sanding-mark claim describes a tested or specified use within a system. It is not a promise that every scratch resembling that grade can be removed safely from every car. The starting finish and the sanding process affect what the compound must accomplish.
Abrasive grade, tool movement, backing, pressure, contamination and the paint all influence the pattern left behind. An isolated deep mark or pigtail can remain even when the surrounding sanding pattern appears consistent.
Do not convert a bottle’s grit-removal statement into permission to sand unknown factory paint. Sanding is a separate professional assessment with its own material-removal and texture risks.
Check whether the claim applies to rotary or DA use, which pad is specified, and whether scratch refinement precedes compounding. Some documented systems rely on intermediate abrasive stages; others specify a different route.
Also identify whether the instructions concern fresh refinishing paint or an established finish. A process designed around a particular cured repair system should not be transferred casually to an aged original panel.
Where a qualified refinishing process includes sanding, verify the scratch pattern before moving on. Compounding should not become a way to hide incomplete refinement temporarily beneath residue.
After the prescribed inspection cleaning, compare the remaining pattern with the starting condition. If isolated marks remain, identify their source before repeating broad aggressive work. The appropriate answer may be a local reassessment rather than compounding the entire panel again.
The useful purchasing question is whether the manufacturer documents a complete process relevant to your work. Ask for the applicable technical sheet and any limits on paint type, cure condition and pad pairing.
A well-supported sanding-mark capability can help choose a compound. It cannot determine how much clear coat is available on the customer’s car or guarantee that every defect should be removed.
