Coating Trial Stopping Rules: Decide Before Results Arrive

Ending a test when results look favourable can bias the conclusion. A stopping rule should be defined before the comparison begins.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Practical approach

State planned duration, inspection points and legitimate early-stop conditions. Record departures from the plan with their reasons.

Stopping one candidate after a good week while continuing another through harsher exposure creates an unfair comparison.

Decision limits

Do not conceal early termination. Explain what was observed and what the shortened test cannot establish.
