Salt-Spray Results for Nano Coatings on Metal

Interpret salt-spray reports for nano-coated metals by checking the complete specimen system, acceptance criteria and limits of outdoor-life predictions.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A salt-spray result can help compare defined metal coating systems under controlled conditions. It should not be read as a direct outdoor lifespan. The substrate, preparation, coating system, specimen details and assessment criteria all affect the meaning of the result.

Identify the complete specimen system

Ask which metal and original finish were tested, how edges were handled and what preparation and cure were used. Determine whether the sample contained other protective layers beneath the nano coating. A result for that combination should not be attributed solely to the final treatment without an appropriate comparison.

Check whether the report includes untreated or otherwise relevant controls and enough specimens to show variation.

Understand the standard reference

ASTM B117 defines operation of a salt-spray environment. Its published scope does not prescribe a universal specimen, exposure period or interpretation for every product. The current practice also cautions that stand-alone salt-spray results generally do not provide a simple prediction of natural exposure performance.

Therefore, a statement such as tested to B117 is incomplete without the actual conditions, evaluation method and outcome.

Read the failure criteria

Clarify whether the assessment concerns corrosion, blistering, adhesion, appearance or another defined property. Ask where the observation was made and how edge effects or deliberately damaged areas were treated. A single photograph of a clean central area may omit relevant parts of the specimen.

Do not use the test result to approve an untested mixed-metal joint or a different substrate automatically.

Connect laboratory evidence with service conditions

Review relevant field exposure and maintenance requirements alongside the report. Coastal, sheltered indoor and continuously wet applications are different environments. A credible nano coating proposal describes the tested system and its limits, then explains what additional evidence is needed for the intended metal component. It does not convert a laboratory hour count into an unsupported promise of years at sea.
