Coating Packaging Orders: Account for Version-Specific Stock

Packaging stock is usable only if it matches the current approved product configuration. A warehouse can hold enough labels or cartons numerically while lacking the correct version for the next coating order.

The key distinction

Track artwork and instruction revisions alongside the physical quantity. A change may affect only some components, so do not assume that an entire kit becomes obsolete or remains usable as a group. The responsible reviewer should decide what can be used, reworked or held, with the decision linked to the actual version.

Practical checks

  1. Identify the version of each packaging component and the product configuration it supports.
  2. Separate quantities approved for the next run from superseded or unresolved stock.
  3. Reconcile the assembly plan against version-specific availability before placing a new order or promising a dispatch date.

Example

Illustrative example: the business has 500 cartons but only 120 carry the current instruction reference. Reporting 500 available cartons would overstate readiness if the remaining version has not been approved for use. The purchasing decision should follow the release status of each version.

Scope and limits

Do not cover or alter essential information through an improvised correction. Any rework needs the appropriate approval and verification. A version register supports accuracy but does not replace review of mandatory labelling or the manufacturer's current technical instructions.
