Coating Overlap Bands on Glass: Diagnose a Repeating Process Pattern

Use the spacing and direction of glass-coating bands to investigate applicator overlap, handling and inspection before changing the formulation.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Repeated bands on a coated glass pane contain process information. Their spacing and direction may correspond to applicator passes, a handling operation or an inspection reflection. Preserve the pattern before attempting correction.

Map the bands against the work sequence

Record pane orientation, pass direction, working-section boundaries and the point where the applicator was replenished. Photograph the dry pane under a repeatable viewing arrangement. Inspect both faces so marks on the reverse side are not assigned to the coating.

Compare the pattern with a controlled trial

Use suitable trial panes and change one justified process variable at a time within the product instructions. For example, compare the documented overlap practice while keeping preparation, applicator type and inspection conditions constant.

Pattern Investigation target

Inspect the full sequence

A band that appears after packing may not have existed at release. Compare photographs from each station where available. Avoid assigning the cause solely from the final appearance.

Confirm the correction over a run

Once a process change appears effective, repeat it across several representative pane sizes and operators. Check whether the problem returns as the applicator condition or production pace changes.

Record the accepted method with a diagram of the working pattern. The objective is consistent application and a reproducible finish, not an arbitrary overlap percentage detached from the actual coating, applicator and glass geometry.
