Coating Inspection Alerts: The Defect Base Rate Affects What an Alert Means

The proportion of real defects among inspection alerts depends partly on how common defects are in the inspected population. An alert rate alone does not describe the inspection method's practical meaning.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

Review the method against a suitable reference and keep the population context. A result from a deliberately defect-rich training set may not predict the same alert composition in routine production.

Practical checks

  1. Record the population and reference classification.
  2. Separate detection performance from the proportion of alerts confirmed.
  3. Validate the interpretation under relevant operating conditions.

Example

Arithmetic example: if a hypothetical inspection generates ten confirmed defect alerts and twenty false alarms, only one third of its thirty alerts are confirmed defects, even though it may detect many of the defects present.

Scope and limits

These numbers are illustrative. Do not use them as a NANOLAB quality estimate or replace the approved review process with an assumed probability.
